About the Course
Taught by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst.
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is considered an evidence-based best practice treatment by the American Psychological Association, having passed scientific tests of usefulness, quality, and effectiveness. The course covers how behavior works, how it is affected by the environment, and how learning takes place. By performing a Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA), we can understand what in the environment is favoring a behavior and change that environment to increase behaviors that are helpful and adaptive and decrease behaviors that are harmful or affect learning.
ABA involves several techniques for understanding and promoting behavioral change, and it is unique in that it can be adapted to each person’s needs, teaching skills that are useful in everyday life. It has been used for people with typical and atypical development — including autism spectrum disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Taught online in the Department of Psychology at the University of Fribourg by Dr. Piccolo, a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) with an MS in Behavior Analysis.

Functional Behavioral Assessment
Weekly applied exercises build toward the course goals: observing real (or constructed) parent–child interactions to identify reinforcing and punishing contingencies, then performing a Functional Behavioral Assessment of a specific behavior and proposing an individualized, objective intervention — a schedule to teach a new behavior or reduce a problem one.
